If your car won't start one morning, someone’s already offering you a ride or give you a jump. When work and school schedules collide, another neighbor happily steps in to watch the kids for a bit.
All those big celebrations, little milestones, and even the everyday ups and downs, they get shared. It builds this beautiful web of care that just feels like family.
Here, parents aren't raising their kids in isolation. We're all in it together, alongside friends and neighbors who know the daily rhythm of life in this place. That network of trust and genuine kindness is what turns a town into a real community. No one feels like they're doing it all alone, and every kid grows up wrapped in way more love than any single family could ever give on their own.
One of my absolute favorite things about Seldovia is how we do graduations. I grew up going to a big high school where we each got just four tickets for our closest family and friends, super limited. But here? No tickets needed. The whole community shows up. And I mean shows up... with so much love and pride for our kids. It's almost overwhelming in the best way.
As the graduates line up like at the congratulatory reception line after a wedding, there are cards, gifts, cash, and endless hugs pouring in from every direction. You can see it on the graduates' faces, they suddenly get just how much this entire town has their back and is rooting for them. It's such an emotional, heartwarming event. I'm so grateful that all three of my kids got to experience that kind of community celebration. It really stays with you.
