Groceries & Food Access
Seldovia has a local store where you can pick up basic groceries and essentials. You’ll find pantry staples, frozen goods, and everyday items and the selection is amazing - Chris and Tata do a great job of making the Crabpot a place to get everything from ice cream to artichoke hearts and fresh veggies and fruit! But they are just one store, so you may have special favorites that you'll need to grab those elsewhere! We love to shop local and support our neighbors and friends!
If you need something from Anchorage, Ronnie with True North Air shops Costco, Fast food places, Best Buy, West Marine, whatever you need and will bring it right to our airport for you! First Class for sure!
For bigger shopping trips, many residents travel to Homer, or Kenai & Soldotna where there are larger grocery stores and more variety. This often means planning ahead, making lists, and stocking up.
It’s common to:
- Buy in bulk
- Keep a well-stocked pantry
- Use freezers for long-term storage
Fresh produce is available, but it may be seasonal or more expensive due to transportation.
Shipping & Deliveries
Getting packages in Seldovia is totally doable but patience is key.
Mail and freight typically come through Homer before reaching Seldovia by boat or plane. This means deliveries can take longer than expected, especially during bad weather.
Locals get used to:
- Ordering ahead of time
- Tracking shipments closely
- Being flexible with delivery dates
Transportation for Essentials
There are no roads connecting Seldovia to the mainland, so transportation plays a big role in daily life.
Residents rely on:
- Boats
- Small planes
- The ferry system between Seldovia and Homer
This affects everything from grocery runs to receiving supplies, making planning an essential skill.
Utilities & Daily Living
Basic utilities like electricity, water, and heating are available, but costs can be higher than in urban areas.
Many homes use:
- Fuel oil or wood for heating
- Water storage systems
- Backup supplies for emergencies
Being prepared isn’t just helpful—it’s part of the lifestyle. Living remote isn’t about going without, it’s about living differently!
